Discover the Azores Islands

The archipelago of the Azores is located in the Atlantic Ocean and extends in a southeast to northwest arch that covers 600 km (372 miles). It is made up of nine islands clustered into three groups: the Eastern group (São Miguel and Santa Maria), the Central group (Terceira, Graciosa, São Jorge, Pico and Faial), and the Western Group (Corvo and Flores).

The islands occupy a privileged spot where geography and history come together in harmony; thus, a trip to Pico, the tallest island in the chain at an altitude of 2,352 m, (7,716 ft.) is a must. The eastern-most island is Santa Maria, at about 1,460 km (907 mi.) from the European coastline, whereas the western-most is the Island of Flores, situated 3,750 km (2,330 mi.) from North America.

The volcanic origin of the Azores can be seen in the number of volcanic cones, craters and other features throughout the islands.
The land area of each island varies, with the largest one, São Miguel, measuring 747 km2 (288 mi2) and Corvo, the smallest, only 17 km2 (6.5 m2).

Santa Maria - Local Festivities

On the island of Santa Maria, the Feast Days of the Holy Spirit, themselves linked to the charitable works performed by the 14th century Portuguese monarch and saint, Queen St. Isabel, are a festive high point for the people.
On the feast day, tradition indicates that open fires be lit for cooking the “empire soup” (sopa do império) in rustic iron pots. Some meat dishes are also prepared.
Feast Day of Santo Amaro, at Praia, Almagreira, on January 15th.
Festival at Vila do Porto, on August 15th.
Feast Days in honour of various parish’s Patron Saints, throughout the summer months.
The August Tide Festival (Maré de Agosto)
For the last 12 years in Praia Formosa, part of the commemorations of the August Tide Festival has been one of the largest music festivals in the Azores, taking place at the last weekend of the month.
